RAC statement on proposed Locomotive Emissions Regulations
The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) is reviewing the proposed Locomotive Emissions Regulations, published in the June 18, 2016 edition of Canada Gazette, Part 1.
Canada’s railways have been voluntarily working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and criteria air contaminants (CAC) from locomotives operating in Canada for more than two decades, in part under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between RAC and the federal government.
Under the MOU, the industry has reduced intensities of several types of CAC emissions, including nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. For example, Canada’s freight railways have reduced their NOx emissions intensity – the quantity of NOx emitted per unit of productivity (revenue tonne-kilometre) – by 56.1 per cent since 1990.
RAC looks forward to working collaboratively with the government to ensure that the railway industry continues to be a sustainable transportation solution for reducing emissions in Canada.
