Railway Association of Canada Reacts to Duty and Rest Period Rules
On November 25, 2020 the Minister of Transport approved the Duty and Rest Period Rules for Railway Operating Employees. Drafted by the industry and the Railway Association of Canada (RAC), these rules reflect the latest science and fatigue management practices and take into account the operational realities of Canadian railways.
The industry collaborated with union representatives when developing the rules, as well as Professor Drew Dawson, an independent fatigue expert who has spent more than 30 years researching the effects of fatigue on work performance, errors and safety.
These rules represent an improvement over the existing framework and benefits both the railways and the employees who operate the trains,” said Marc Brazeau, President and CEO of the Railway Association of Canada, “The new rules introduce additional science-based controls which will further mitigate risks associated with fatigue and improve rail safety.”
