Railway Association of Canada honours 2016 Safety Award winners
The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) today recognized CN and Quebec North Shore & Labrador (QNSL) Railway for their outstanding contributions to rail safety by presenting each company with a 2016 RAC Safety Award at the Atlantic Region Railway Conference.
In the Class 1 category, CN won an award for its “Looking Out For Each Other” initiative, which trains employees on observing their co-workers and communicating with them when they see at-risk activities. In the non-Class 1 category, QNSL won an award for its geotechnical risk database, which combines multiple levels of safety data into a single interactive program.
“Initiatives like the ones launched by this year’s award winners focus on a crucial, fundamental aspect of rail safety: managing risk,” said Gérald Gauthier, RAC’s Vice-President of Public and Corporate Affairs. “Proactive approaches like these demonstrate why Canada’s railways are among the safest in North America. Congratulations to CN and QNSL on their 2016 RAC Safety Awards.”
Pat Orr, Superintendent Transportation for CN, and Pierre Dupré, Superintendent Maintenance of Way for QNSL, accepted the awards on behalf of their companies.
RAC’s Safety Awards recognize member-railways that have displayed outstanding leadership in rail safety, and are working to ensure that Canada’s railway network remains the safest in the world.
